musicJAPANplus x w-inds.worldwide Song Tournament!

Published on September 30, 2012, by in Uncategorized.

The w-inds. worldwide staff have been hinting at something big coming up, and we’re proud to finally announce our collaborative project with musicJAPANplus!

Most foreign fans of Japanese music are familiar with musicJAPANplus as they are one of the few websites out there which strive to make information about Japanese music available in many languages. They have even conducted interviews with w-inds. in the past and have written numerous articles about their activities which can be found here: http://www.musicjapanplus.jp/artistdb/?action=writeup&artist_id=88

After she saw one of our previous video projects on YouTube, we were contacted by Yuki, one of the chief editors at musicJAPANplus. She said she was moved by the dedication of w-inds. fans around the world and our desire to one day see w-inds. be able to perform for us in many places. She made us a fantastic offer: not only will she feature the video we make for this project on the official musicJAPANplus YouTube channel, she said she will personally deliver the video and message to w-inds. and their agency.

Due to confidentiality, we can’t receive a direct response from w-inds. nor their agency about the project, but there is a 100% chance that they will see what we create. Chances like this do not come often, and it’s up to you guys to give it your all and prove to w-inds. and their agency that they have a reason to come play for you outside Japan.

The ultimate goal of this project is to make a video of w-inds. from around the world saying the lyrics to a w-inds. song in their own language. When the time comes, you will send an e-mail to our special project e-mail address and you will be assigned the lyrics to record in your video. The w-inds. worldwide staff will be able to provide you lyrics in Japanese, English, Thai, German, Spanish, Dutch, Vietnamese and Chinese.

This is the fun part. We will hold a two part tournament. Round 1 will start on October 8th HAS STARTED: http://windsworldwide.com/?page_id=1557 HAS FINISHED. Fans will have one week to vote for their favorite songs. You’re free to get as many votes for your song as possible, and we encourage you to campaign for your cause through twitter, facebook, or whatever way you can imagine.

After Round 1 comes to a close, will then choose the top 5 songs from the list and have a second battle. The final decision will be made on October 15th at midnight Japan time. The winning song will be declared the Best w-inds. Song in the World and will be the song we all come together to perform for w-inds. UPDATE: ROUND 2 here!

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SING. Just speaking the lyrics is okay. If you could say it to the melody of the song, that would be excellent. Since copyright rules state that we cannot use music for this video, it doesn’t really matter. Nobody compares to w-inds. performance-wise, so your smiling face saying the lyrics in your language is the only thing we care about seeing in the video.

We will announce the start of Round 1 and where to vote on twitter and facebook. More directions for the video will follow once the song is decided, but please keep in mind that the deadline for everything will be DECEMBER 1ST, 2012.

More than ever, it is imperative that we show our support in numbers. Not only do we want to leave a good impression on w-inds. and their agency, we want to show our appreciation to musicJAPANplus for their amazing kindness.

w-inds.worldwide Scavenger Hunt Contest!

Published on March 24, 2014, by in project.

We’re looking for traces of w-inds. all over the globe. Get out your cameras and photograph anything w-inds. related you can find in your city!

w-inds. in NYC
Found in NYC

We will be offering two prizes of $20 YESASIA gift certificates; one for the person who submits the most pictures, and one for the person whose picture receives the most “likes”.

  1. All photographs must be uploaded to the “w-inds.worldwide Scavenger Hunt Contest” album in our facebook group. For the album itself, click here.
  2. Photographs must be related to w-inds. song/album titles, lyrics, or must be otherwise obvious to fellow w-inds. fans. This site is a good reference.
  3. The words in your photo don’t necessarily have to be in English/Japanese, but you should include a translation in your photo caption.
  4. While we encourage creativity, we hope that the actual w-inds. reference in your picture is naturally occurring (meaning that you didn’t make something and place it somewhere). That being said, if you and your friends want to recreate a scene from a PV in a place that looks similar in your town, we wouldn’t be against that at all.
  5. Different people are allowed to submit a shot of the same landmark/place etc., it’s up to you to make your picture more interesting than any of the other submissions. Again, be creative!
  6. We encourage fans to get in the photo as well, but it’s not a requirement.
  7. There will be two prizes offered, however the same person cannot win both prizes.
  8. You are at the mercy of your fellow w-inds. fans, so be nice to each other!

The deadline will be APRIL 30TH.

Happy hunting!

w-inds.worldwide Picture Project

Published on June 14, 2013, by in project.

Hi everyone!

I’m Eri, and I’m the Spanish translator for w-inds.worldwide. Some of you might know me from facebook or twitter, but for those of you that don’t I am a fairly new w-inds. fan compared to the rest of the staff. I live in Toronto now, and like most of you, I share the dream of seeing w-inds. live one day.

I came up with this project along with the other staff members with the aim to show our support for the boys in their individual promotions. It’s a fun and easy way for us fans to get together once again and show the boys that we support what they do no matter what. We want to emphasize that we are “w-inds.” fans and therefore we are fans of “Ryohei, Keita and Ryuichi.”

Here are the instructions/rules:

1. Take the logo you see above and place it on a setting that represents your culture or where you are from. Be creative! For example you can print it and temporarily place it on a sign or monument that represents your country/culture. Or maybe make a t-shirt with the logo and wear it on a place that is popular in your hometown. Anything you feel like doing!

2. Take a picture of the logo at the setting you choose. Please keep it PG!!!

3. Send the picture or pictures to eri_0301@windsworldwide.com

We will be tweeting the pictures, for as long as they keep coming, on our Twitter account @windsworldwide.

We hope that this is a simple project where everyone can take a couple of minutes to show their love and support! Feel free to ask me any questions through the above email or my Twitter account @Eri_0301. Thank you.

Melissa’s Message

Wow. This got long.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped work on this video. To say I’m surprised would be an understatement. If I can get personal here, I had a really long and emotionally exhausting day at work, saying goodbye to some of my students and feeling worn out beyond measure; watching this video when I got home really, really helped me feel better, even if I was crying through it. I’d blame my hay fever but it’s really just that I’m soft!

Life in Japan has been full of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t have traded these years for anything! w-inds. worldwide was a HUGE part of my time here, sometimes much more of a time (and heart!) consuming job than my actual paid one, but it made me so happy.

I’ll always remember being a university student in upstate New York, lying on my crappy dorm mattress and praying with all of my might to one day have the chance to see a single, solitary w-inds. concert. I didn’t care if it was in a venue the size of a football field and my seat was in the deep back — just to be in the same space as these three guys would have been enough. Back then, the Internet fandom was sprawled all around, and, if I can be really honest, I never felt like I belonged in any of the existing fan spaces. Actually, the place I felt most comfortable was a Thai BBS, even though all I could understand were the few English words and the merry “555555” chains. Ash was my main w-inds. friend and my other fandom friends were almost entirely local. It’s so funny to think about that now, but it was true… almost every single one of my friends who liked w-inds. lived in either New York or the Northeast US.

And w-inds. themselves felt half a world away — in part because, well, they were. They blogged sometimes, and I remember once being so happy to get the “first” comment on an entry Ryuichi made, likely about his owl pooping on his sofa or something like that, but for the most part, I had no real idea what was happening with w-inds. and had no real network of people to enjoy them with. The few “goods” I had were knockoffs from China Town and even though I often dreamed about somehow finding enough money to get on a plane and hop to Japan for their summer tours, these plans always stopped short because I had no idea how I’d even go about getting a concert ticket once I made it there.

I worked hard to come to Japan after graduating, and I’ll always remember my first w-inds. concert. It was during the Seventh Ave. tour in Kobe. My seat was in the back of the third floor, and w-inds. themselves looked more like tiny action figures than real flesh-and-blood people, but I could just feel the years of love and gratitude rushing through my veins as I watched them dance and sing. At that moment, I was hooked.

With w-inds. worldwide, it has always been my hope to let other people have the same feeling. I won’t lie and say it wasn’t difficult or stressful at times; ticket lottery time was always hard, especially with trying to find Japanese fans willing to ballot for the fans we ran out of ballots for, and you’re all aware of how terrible I was at sending goods orders out on time — but when I saw fans flushed with excitement after a great show or got happy messages from people halfway across the world about their t-shirts or pamphlets finally making it to their hands, I could feel nothing but happiness. And to think — that my fandom circle, once isolated to the upper right corner of the US, now spreads to almost every continent! (Does anyone want to move to Antarctica and make it all seven?)

And not just this — to know that the members of w-inds. know about all of you through our video projects and other projects is just so amazing to me. The Internet has really made the world smaller, and the kindness w-inds. has shown in accepting our messages has blown me away. I would have never thought, holed up in my concrete university in NY, that one day I’d be working on videos that Ryuichi himself would comment on. I never thought that one day I’d hear Keita say things about wanting to go worldwide and perform in countries even outside of Asia (this has been a huge theme of his solo, and one of the reasons I urge all of you, even the non-KT fans, to please support him). I never thought I’d hear Ryohei say in MCs that he was studying English for his “future”. While I can’t say that w-inds. worldwide has caused some of these changes, I can say that we certainly were a catalyst, and I hope you can all be proud of that.

Ash and I were lucky enough to go to the 10th anniversary concert on 4/28/2011. Do you remember how almost the entire show was broadcast on the Internet for everyone to watch? The last song they performed was “THANK YOU” and something I’ll never forget is how it felt to look up at the screens above their heads and realize that “thank you” was being spelled out in many different languages — not just Japanese. That thank you was for all of you.

I don’t know so many different languages, but if I did, I’d thank all of you in all of them. It warms my heart when people refer to w-inds. worldwide as a family. I certainly hope that you can feel that way. Like all families, there are sometimes fights, disagreements, misunderstandings, and heartache; with a family this size and spanning so many countries and cultures, this is almost certain to be the case! But whether you are a fan who participates in all projects or a fan who has never said a word but just quietly sat on the sidelines observing, I deeply appreciate you being here. We are family. Thank you so much.

Sincerely Yours With All My Heart,

Ash’s Message

Project AM participants and www,

Firstly, thank you guys so much! I don’t have the words to express how much this video means to me. I also had no idea you were planning something like this. It’s really hard to surprise me, but you guys managed to sneak one by me somehow! I know things like this take a lot of time and patience, so thanks so much for going through all that just for us.

In light of recent incidents, I actually felt quite defeated about my work with w-inds.worldwide. I’m not the sort of person to think about the sort of things she has really accomplished, instead I dwell on mistakes or imperfections and it really makes it hard to see the big picture. I’m my own worst critic, and when I feel I’m doing the best I can and my best isn’t good enough for some people, it’s just a terrible, terrible feeling. “Behind the scenes” of www, there were a lot of tough times where I totally bit off way more than I could chew, but I somehow managed with Melissa at my side to do it pretty well anyway. It’s kind of weird, but I gained a ton of communication and management skills that will probably help me in future jobs. And to be honest, even if it was stressful, I really enjoyed doing it because of you good people and because w-inds. are the best.

All I wanted to accomplish with w-inds.worldwide was a feeling that people could come together to celebrate something we all love despite differences in culture. I can happily say that we managed to build that community together. In the past, there were places scattered around the internet for international fans such as feel-the-fate, feel to w-inds., and baidu, which were all essential in growing our love of w-inds. as a fandom, but there wasn’t really any one place that united us before, so I’m glad that we were able to fill that void.

I’m thrilled we got the chance to help people actually come see w-inds. themselves. All the late, late nights communicating with fans and organizing tickets were well rewarded by the smiles and tears long-time fans had after seeing w-inds. in person for the first time. It’s a feeling that many Japanese fans will probably never understand and I was so pleased to be able to help people make their dreams come true. It’s probably one of the best feelings I’ve ever had in my life.

I’m also glad by some happy coincidence our message was able to be heard by w-inds. themselves. Not only did it solve the problem of foreign fans feeling completely out of touch with what was going on in the world of w-inds., but it created a direct connection. I think knowing that there are a lot of people outside of Japan that really love their music was a positive thing for w-inds. too. Hopefully they could see that they weren’t limited by their circumstances here and it encouraged them to expand their horizons as artists. We as fans went from having to wait for the summer tour DVD to come out to getting facebook updates (IN ENGLISH) in just a few years. How cool is that?

On a personal note, a lot of the friends I made early on through w-inds.worldwide were mostly quite young girls and I’ve really enjoyed seeing you mature and blossom into smart, internationally-minded young women over the last few years. Though we came together because of w-inds., we’ll continue on as family. I’m really, really proud of you all and all of your accomplishments. I hope that, if nothing else, our journey to Japan and our experiences here have shown that even when the odds are really against you, if you stay positive and passionate about something, you can make your dreams come true (no matter how crazy they may seem).

Keep in touch, guys!

Love always,

Changes to w-inds.worldwide

Published on February 27, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

In anticipation of our return to the US this summer, we have decided to turn w-inds.worldwide into an information source only, and primarily in English. From 2013, we will no longer be assisting fans with buying tickets or merchandise. Upon returning to the US we may or may not take down this website itself. We will continue to update our twitter with any major w-inds.-related news, and the facebook group will remain as it is now. We will also be keeping tabs on the members of w-inds. as they pursue their individual career goals. If you’re interested, you can follow our member-related twitter accounts.

Ryohei – @RYOworldwide
Keita – @KEITAworldwide
Ryuichi – @RYUworldwide

Facebook group – http://www.facebook.com/groups/windsworldwide/

We’d like to thank our staff for their incredibly hard work that they did out of the goodness of their hearts and because of their love for w-inds. We’d also like to thank all you FANS for your support over the years. We enjoyed meeting so many people and having the chance to share our love of w-inds. and their music with people all around the world. We hope that we made the distance between you all feel a little smaller. Good luck to you all – and to w-inds., too!

Bunka Tsushin Article Translation Regarding KEITA’s Solo

Published on November 27, 2012, by in Uncategorized.

Bunka Tsushin had a very interesting little article about KEITA’s solo project, so I did a quick translation. There may be errors, but the general ideas are all intact.

EDIT: The author of the original article retracted his statement regarding Justin Bieber; KEITA actually said Justin Timberlake, not Bieber. The translation has been edited to reflect this.

w-inds. Tachibana Keita Begins Solo as KEITA. His Goal: Surpass J. Timberlake

Keita Tachibana, main vocalist of the 3 man dance vocal unit w-inds., has begun a solo project under the name KEITA. I attended his showcase on the 26th in Tokyo. Starting with his single “Slide’n’step” to be released on February 20th, he aims to use his singing and dancing to become an R&B singer of a world level standard. When asked about his ultimate aim, he cited the names of artists like Justin Timberlake, saying “I want to try my best to make my way to that level.”

w-inds. is already famous all around Asia, so on this day, overseas media also appeared. “I’m happy,” he said with a huge grin. “I want to flap my wings and soar into the world.” In addition, many domestic media and entertainment related people also attended the event, in which he performed “Slide’n’step” and “Thinking of You.” With his masterclass performance, he made a huge impression not as Keita Tachibana but as KEITA.

He’d been planning a solo project for about a year. He prepared the lyrics and the choreography by himself, and said “I want to open up more and more of my abilities. I want to use images during my concerts, try and add different entertaining elements to my work, and collaborate with different artists.” His ideal is boundless. He also stated “I want to work as a new artist, exploring and searching for new stimuli everywhere.”

In the world of show business, he is known for his beautiful muscles, but he refused to show them this day. Addressing his fans, he promised “I am going to pull out all the stops in this music video.” In regards to w-inds., he said they’d resume activities by the end of next year.
